My name is Donald Fleck. I’ve done quite a few things in my life. But, these days I spend a lot of time just being in the present moment. This morning I did my 20-minutes of Yoga, my 30-minute meditation, and savored every bite of my cereal as I ate it mindfully.
I live in Brooklyn NY, and work in Manhattan and Brooklyn. At my age I’m supposed to be slowing down, enjoying the fruits of my life (so my friends tell me) but I’ve found this exciting gem. I’ve found a very helpful and fruitful way to combine two wonderful things: psychotherapy and mindfulness meditation.
I’ve raised a family. All grown up. Their mother and I are hugely proud of our children. I ring doorbells for favored politicians, garden (I love being in nature), weed (it’s really satisfying), walk in the woods and on the beach, read books, watch movies…
But what really gets me… is the continuing beauty, power… and mystery of the human mind.
I have an 8-week group for long-term sufferers from depression. Called Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, it can cut depression relapse rates in half… and significantly reduce suffering from general anxiety disorder.
I often include teachings on mindfulness meditation, perhaps the greatest advance in mental health treatment in the past 20 years. You can change how you experience your situation, and new actions can emerge from this.
Note: this powerfully combines with cognitive therapy (CBT)
If your feelings are overwhelming, I offer some specialized ways to help you manage them. Sometimes feelings need to be contained before they can safely be felt. So, surprisingly, affect regulation can be a pre-requisite to feeling…. and healing.
Psychotherapy is an art, not a science. As with any art, the outcome or result cannot be guaranteed. I have conscientiously trained, but no one person can possibly know all there is to know. No one therapist can be best for every client. If for any reason my client feels that the treatment is not working, or is somehow working badly, it is very important the client knows she or he can always consult another professional, or change therapists.
